STAND DOWN
Friday, Sept 27, 2024
Veterans helping veterans is the foundation of Post 371. We continue to strengthen this foundation with our involvement with 'Stand Down of South Jersey,' an outreach program to assist homeless veterans and their family members through numerous services ranging from employment to medical help, from substance abuse programs to veterans benefits information along with shelter, meals, clothing, and medical attention.
This annual event is an entirely volunteer effort, organized within Camden County, bringing service providers together such as the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialists, Local Veterans Employment representatives, the American Legion and various other veterans service organizations, military personnel, civic leaders, and a variety of other organizations. Since 1996 this event has served as a catalyst that enables homeless veterans to re-enter mainstream society.
During the Vietnam War, a Stand Down order allowed combat soldiers to take a break from the front lines allowing them to rest and recover. They will steer away from the battlefield and stay at a place with security. Soldiers use the time to:
* Enjoy hot meals * Get clean uniforms * Take baths and showers *
*Receive medical care * Write/read letters *
